Stella Maris Fishing Station Miniature

Who remembers stopping at Stella Maris Fishing Station for bait and tackle before heading out for a day of fishing on Sheepshead Bay?

For generations, Stella Maris was part of everyday life along the Brooklyn waterfront. The six Lauro brothers founded the fishing station in 1947 on Emmons Avenue in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. Over the years, it became a neighborhood institution.

Fishermen remember the early mornings and stopping in for bait and tackle before heading out on the water. They also remember the boats and docks out back, fishermen coming and going, and bringing the day’s catch back to be weighed.

Stella Maris wasn’t simply a bait and tackle shop.

It was part of the fishing culture of Sheepshead Bay.

A Piece of Sheepshead Bay History

The story of Stella Maris goes all the way back to its humble beginnings.

After the Lauro brothers purchased the property, they reportedly collected driftwood from the water after storms. Then, they used the salvaged lumber to help build their docks, piers, bulkheads and buildings. In addition, the brothers built rowboats and made fishing nets.

From those humble beginnings, Stella Maris grew into a place that generations of local fishermen knew and loved.

For more than 75 years, people came here before heading out onto the water. As a result, Stella Maris became much more than a place to buy bait. It became part of the neighborhood and part of the memories of generations of Brooklyn fishermen.

Eventually, Stella Maris closed. Later, the building came down too.

Another familiar piece of old Sheepshead Bay disappeared.

However, the memories don’t have to disappear with it.

Recreated in Miniature

That’s why I recreated Stella Maris Fishing Station as a detailed miniature replica.

I wanted to capture the character of the old Emmons Avenue fishing station and the little details that made Stella Maris instantly recognizable.

For example, longtime Brooklyn residents may remember its classic storefront and old Coca-Cola sign. Others remember buying bait and tackle, seeing the fishermen coming and going, or simply passing Stella Maris while traveling along Emmons Avenue.

Therefore, this miniature isn’t just a model of a building. It’s a way to preserve a memory of Sheepshead Bay.

You can display your Stella Maris miniature on a shelf or in a display case. You can also add it to your collection of Brooklyn landmarks or even place it in your holiday village.

In addition, it makes a meaningful gift for a fisherman, former Sheepshead Bay resident, Brooklyn history lover, or anyone who remembers Stella Maris.

Today, the original Stella Maris Fishing Station may be gone.

But now it can live on in miniature.

Because some Brooklyn originals deserve to be remembered forever and always.
