In 1920 Grandpa Morris and his brothers immigrated to the United States from Bialystock, Poland, and brought with them their knowledge of a local soft yeast bread known as Bialystoker Kuchens. Kuchen is the German word for cake. Originally, the business was started in a basement in Coney Island, and that is where the Coney Island Bialy Bakery was born. In 1954, the bakery was opened on 2359 Coney Island Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. It became the first retail bialy bakery. Years later his grandson would take over operations. Each day for 16 years, Steve Ross commuted from his home in Manalapan, NJ to Coney Island Bialys & Bagels in Brooklyn. Leaving around 2 a.m. His return trip home each afternoon took three hours, as he drove through New Jersey delivering to customers, including Foodtown supermarkets, Jerry and Harvey’s in Marlboro, and Bagel Boy in Old Bridge. As years passed things changed. The kids weren’t going to take over. And the journey was over. Steve decided to close the business. It was sold to two brothers but closed soon after. I was honored to create the first master copy of this model for owner Steve Ross and family. They treasure the model and are very happy to have it as a visual reminder of the glory days.
