Ferdinando’s Focacceria was a Brooklyn institution, serving up authentic Sicilian cuisine since 1904. Founded by the Buffa family in Carroll Gardens, it started as a small sandwich shop catering to Italian American dockworkers. Over the years, it became famous for its traditional Sicilian dishes, especially the panelle sandwich—crispy chickpea fritters with ricotta and caciocavallo cheese.

Despite its no-frills approach, the restaurant attracted a devoted following, including celebrities like Frank Sinatra, who sent his driver for rice balls, and Martin Scorsese, who filmed a scene from The Departed there.

After 121 years in business, owner Francesco “Frank” Buffa, now 75, decided to close the restaurant in February 2025 due to age and health reasons. While its doors have shut, Buffa hopes someone will take over and keep Ferdinando’s legacy alive.
